South Carolina Senator, Lindsey Graham, and Maine’s Susan Collins urged the President to be wise and remain publicly silent on an independent investigation towards his 2016 campaign links with Russia in the wake of newly found reports that Trump tried to fire the council. The two Republican Senators also urged Robert Mueller to look into the allegations that Trump tried to fire him in June 2017 as the reports stated.
Trump has pegged the news on his attempts to fire the special counsel in June 2017 as fake news. Otherwise, the two senators maintained that the Mueller was the best person to look into the matter. Mueller was the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2001 to 2013. He is more than experienced in the investigative field. Graham prescribed that the allegations leveled against the president on firing Mueller were grave. He adds that he is sure there will be an investigation into whether trump did try to fire Mueller.
Graham’s sentiments came after a divided Congress where some Republican was against the idea of legislation that would protect Mueller from getting fired without legal basis. Graham supported the bill while insisting that Mueller’s job is not in any immediate danger. He also termed that if Trump fires Mueller, it will be much costly to his presidency. Collins also supports legislation for Mueller’s protection and that the move will not cost Republicans. She added that it would be in the Trump’s vested interest not to discuss the investigation in his usual domain – tweeter.
Fake News as Termed by Trump
Trump’s attempt to fire Mueller was reported by several news outlets including the New York Times. They stated that the president backed off his effort after Don McGahn declined to follow Trump’s directive to fire Mueller through to the Justice Department and even threatened to quit. Trump’s argument that led him to the alleged conclusion to fire Mueller was that Robert owed Trump golf club in Virginia and also represented his son-in-law Jared Kushner, hence a conflict of interest.
Trump ascertained the new articles as not valid.
Despite the allegations, lawmakers in Congress praised Robert’s impartiality. They remarked they were confident that Mueller would conduct and expedite his duties extensively. Democrat Senate leader Schumer expressed democrat’s support for the legislation to protect Mueller.
Majority of the lawmakers agreed that Mueller’s investigation should continue unimpeded.
