The Electoral Law (Reform) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha despite the objections of the opposition parties. According to the proposal of the bill, the registration officer can ask for the Aadhaar card number at the time of registration as a voter. The Centre claims that if the bill becomes law, fake voters will be prevented and transparency in the electoral process will be possible.
Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday. He said the bill would amend the Representation of the People Act of 1950 and the Representation of the People Act of 1951. Although opponents claim that the bill will violate the citizens’ fundamental rights, it was passed. But it has been discussed and claimed that the allegation was completely baseless. Rijiju said, “The amendment was introduced only to prevent fake voters. Fake voters can be caught only after the voter-Aadhaar merger. It’s very important for the government and for democracy. ”
Although this proposal came during the tenure of the UPA government, it was not approved at that time. Mr. HS Brahma, the country’s former chief election made this proposal in 2012.
