Yesterday Punjab CM Amarinder Singh spoke to Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje taking a serious view of the reported assault on 4 Sikh men in Ajmer, to seek her intervention in ensuring a thorough probe into an incident occurred in Ajmer district of Rajasthan. The incident was of mob violence and stringent action against the constable alleged to have abetted the crowd.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh urged the Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje to fix culpability and ensure that the culprits were punished. He also directs the police to take immediate action to prevent such incident’s recurrence, which could escalate if not curbed through strong action by the state police.
A few days back a video showed a crowd dragging 4 Sikh men out of a vehicle and thrashing them at Chainpura in Ajmer district of Rajasthan. The Sikh men were reportedly volunteers from a Gurdwara at Alwar in Rajasthan, who were collecting donations for their trust.
The residents of Chainpura had alleged that the 4 Sikh men had molested their women. Although the police had taken them into police custody but later released them as they were not involved in any molestation. The state police asked those Sikh men to file a cross FIR against those who had assaulted them, but they refused to do that.
Amrinder Singh expressed concern over media reports that there were “efforts” to dilute the incident with a “communal” hue. And Mr. Singh also expressed dismay at the fact that the local police was not even aware of this incident. After the video surfaced and said he was “shocked” at reports that a police constable, who arrived there in the spot of the incident and “instigated” the crowd to “teach those Sikh men a lesson”, instead of coming to their rescue.
Mr. Amrinder Singh said he had urged the Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje Shinde to ensure a thorough inquiry into the incident and strong action against the constable if found guilty. Mr. Singh also added that even though the State Minorities Commission of Rajasthan had reportedly taken cognizance of the video and sought a police report, hence a “strong signal” needed to be sent by the Rajasthan govt. the perpetrators of the violence.
He said, the fact that the Sikh men were volunteers and had stopped in Ajmer district of Rajasthan to collect donations made the incident more condemnable, adding that such “intolerance” has no place in a civilized society and any “attempt to create communal issue” should not be tolerated.
But till now Rajasthan CM has not replied and have not taken any action. However, after arresting those Sikh men, when it has been proved that they are not guilty, police had shown their humanity, asking them to register FIR against those culprits. It shows their humanity and it should be appreciated by CM Amrinder Singh.
