The Defence Ministry of Maldives on Tuesday announced that it will not entertain any military intervention by any other country regarding its internal situation as India was asked to intervene in the worsening situation. They said that they firmly believed that India was not going to act on any such calls. The ministry even assured its people that no foreign military attack is underway and they have no reason to doubt the excellent relationship they have with India. India, however, was caught off guard when the Maldives signed its first trade agreement with China making India worried about its relations with the tiny island nation.

President Abdulla Yameen has served a sharp reminder that the Maldives did not want any foreign intervention in their internal matters and that they firmly believed that India will not answer any such calls for intervening in the internal politics of the country. The statement by the President said that the people of Maldives need not be worried about the excellent relationship with India and that no foreign invasion was coming their way in name of resolving the internal crisis. It said that the country had not sought any military intervention in what they call their personal affairs.

Even Chinese Foreign Ministry had issued a statement regarding the issue sending a warning to the international community to not interfere in the matters. Maldivian Defence Ministry had issued a warning on similar notes saying that they did not want any foreign intervention in what they consider as a temporary internal crisis. The Maldivian Ministry of Defence and National security said in a statement that they had not asked for any foreign intervention to resolve the temporary crisis going in their country. There is no coming threat for the country and they were concerned with the unnecessary and irresponsible calls to the foreign military to intervene in their internal issues. The statement said that the Maldives has a good relation with India and that it hoped that India will not do anything unnecessary to jeopardize the relationship between two countries.

The supporters of President Abdulla Yameen said that the Maldivian Supreme court has been attempting Judicial Coupe to overthrow Yameen from power. The President himself said that there is no other way to properly investigate the coupe without declaring a state of emergency. Even China had a lot of interest to be fulfilled in the Maldives and this referred to the various development projects supported by China in the tiny island country. The statement issued by the Defence ministry also said that it condemned all such calls made for the intervention of India in the country and claimed that these were attempts made to smear the relations between India and Maldives.

India has condemned the Abdulla Yameen’s government after they defied the order of Supreme Court and arrested many top leaders from the opposition and exiled the top leader former president Mohammad Nasheed. Mr. Nasheed has called for help from the US, UK and India to send the military to help resolve the situation in the country.

The Supreme court who had delivered the verdict was arrested on the orders of the President Abdulla Yameen. India has asked the Maldives to roll back all these decisions and urged the President to restore peace and democracy in the country. Meanwhile, President Yameen has slapped the Supreme Court Judges with bribery charge and ordered for the arrests of Chief Justice of Supreme Court. The power of Supreme Court has been reduced and no judge can hear the case individually and it has to be done in a panel with consensus.
