Mitt Romney, a former Republican US presidential race contender is set to run for Utah’s State Senatorial seat after Orrin Hatch, the current Senator plans to retire. Romney is a staunch Republican and businessman but one of the greatest critique of President Donald Trump.

After shelving his announcement for his bid to run for Senate on Thursday due to the Florida School shooting, he made his announcement on Friday last week. He stated that he was running for the seat because there was no better time to bring Utah’s values to Washington amid the trying times. He added that Utah’s economic and political success is a benchmark for the nation.

The President Endorses Mitt Romney

The relationship between the President and Mitt Romney has always been aggressive despite the fact that they are both Republicans. Trump at one time in 2016 stated that Romney, the previous Massachusetts Governor had “choked like a dog” after trying to run against Barack Obama in 2012. At the same time, Romney has severally given his sarcastic critique of Trump. During Trump’s party primaries Romney called the President a “phony” stating that Trump is unfit for office. Romney recently criticized the President’s move to use obscenity to refer to African countries as varying with American values and history.

After Mitt Romney announced his candidacy, Trump took to Twitter on Monday and commented that Mitt will make a great Senator adding that he is a worthy successor to Orin Hatch. Trump said that Romney has his full endorsement and support which Romney also acknowledged via his Twitter account. The President’s move to endorse Romney’s candidacy asserts that the two may have buried the hatchet after a tense relationship.

Expectations from Romney’s Elections

Romney is expected to win the seat as he is considered Utah’s favorite as well as a Mormon. He is also respectable and a staunch businessman; attributes that will favor his win in Utah. The politician also moved his permanent residency to Utah State. His agenda is to share Utah’s successes in politics and economy with Washington.

Democrats and Republicans suggested that if Mitt is elected to the Senate, he will continue to call out on Trump if he believed Trump warranted criticism. As suggested by an anonymous top official on Mitt’s campaign team on Wednesday last week, when Romney made his announcement, he did not mention Trump or his scandal-riddled administration. Romney made his announcement about him and Utah.
