The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will rule Delhi’s civic bodies for the next 5 years after the party’s victory in MCD election 2017. The voting took place in 270 wards across the 3 civic bodies and the results have come three days after voting took place. Three civic bodies are- North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was spurned by Delhi and came a distant 2nd in the election and Congress party’s  Ajay Maken announced that he has resigned from his position while taking responsibility for the party’s poor showing in the Delhi Municipal Corporation  elections 2017. The overall turnout recorded, was almost same as in the 2012 elections, which was 54 percent. Swaraj India, the political arm of Swaraj Abhiyan also contested the elections.

Ajay Maken was entrusted with the Congress party’s charge after Sheila Dikshit was defeated in 2014 by Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). His main task was reorganization of the state unit of Congress and grooming leaders with a clean and soft image. However, he totally failed to prove his mettle in the 2015 state Assembly polls. This seemed to be the last chance for the former Union Minister and it seems the party will now look at bringing in new leadership in the Delhi unit.

Congress has dropped to the 3rd place and hasn’t shown strength in even fifty wards. The party stares at an overwhelming defeat. The hierarchical restructuring has begun. It remains to be seen whether the party brings the proven Sheila Dikshit team back to revive its fortunes in New Delhi.

Bharatiya Janata Party President Mr. Amit Shah said that the MCD election results have pushed PM Modi’s victory chariot forward. The results show negative politics will not work. He congratulated Manoj Tiwari and all BJP party workers. The AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal also congratulated BJP’s victory in the three civic bodies of the MCD election. But AAP leader Ashutosh said “Most of the Voting machines were malfunctioning. It is not possible that all the votes are going to BJP’s court because Aam Aadmi Party has done a lot regarding health care and education in Delhi. One AAP leader Alka Lamba also announced to resign after taking responsibilities for the party’s poor show in her area.

The final tally was of 184 wards for BJP, 46 wards for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), 30 wards for Congress and 10 for others. The elections result was a landslide victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which will only add BJP’s image to invincibility and leave a divided opposition further demoralized in the run up to the 2019 Indian national elections. The Bharatiya Janata  Party (BJP) has controlled the city’s civic bodies for almost a decade.
