On Wednesday, China hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech that he gave at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. The speech spoke against protectionism. The country said that both China and India share common interests in promoting globalization and also in steering the world’s economy towards betterment.
Hua Chunying Sentiments
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said that the country has noticed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks against protectionism and that the PM’s comments showed that globalization is a trend of the times. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson continued to say that globalization serves the interests of all countries including developing countries. Hua Chunying added that in fighting against protectionism and promoting globalization, India and China share in the common interest. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson recalled Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speech in 2017 in which he spoke about protectionism.
As reported by IANS, Hua said that China was interested in enhancing their coordination with all countries including India to steer the economic globalization towards benefitting global economic development as well as the wellbeing of these countries. He described India as a significant neighbor of China. He also said that as the two largest developing countries that are also close neighbors, the hope to maintain sound and steady development of their bilateral relations. He commented that these links would serve in the interest of the two countries.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that China looks forward to working with India to enhance their communication and mutual trust. He added that the country also looks forward to correctly handling their differences with India to ensure a steady and sound development together.
In his speech on Tuesday at the World Economic Forum, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the severe challenges and grave concerns that the world is facing. He cautioned against the rising chorus of protectionism in some countries in the world. He termed this tendency to be as much a threat as terrorism or climate change. He said that many societies and nations are becoming self-centered and that because of this, globalization is shrinking contrary to its definition. He went ahead to add that it was time to admit that globalization is fading.
Modi spoke about the dangerous, fast-spreading “artificial distinction” made between “good terrorism” and “bad terrorism.” He referred to Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of trusteeship to use things according to one’s needs. Modi said that it was time to put aside greed and work together towards achieving globalization.
