In Uttar Pradesh, 5 polls predicted the victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and saying that the BJP will emerge as the single largest party and may come close to 202 seats out of 403 seats. One of them has predicted that BJP could get as many as 285 seats. Polls are showing the no. 2 positions for SP-Cong alliance. And BSP is far behind them with the seat count under 100. Although 2 exit polls placed SP-Cong close to the BJP in the number of seats but said they may be 50 seats short of the majority. News24 and India Today polls gave the BJP more than 250 seats and predicted that SP-Cong will be close to 100 or lesser than that. India TV and ABP News put the SP-Cong alliance at around 150 seats and India news predicted that it will be close to 120 seats.
Setting the stage for a pulsating Saturday, only after few hours, when votes will be counted to decide the winner in five states including Goa, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Uttar Pradesh, just one day before exit polls gave the BJP a clear edge in Uttar Pradesh. But what others are saying. Interestingly Congress president Mr Rahul Gandhi is unable to understand the result of exit polls. He is saying that it will go horribly wrong; they are going to win this election.
Obviously in maximum case exit polls didn’t go wrong in the past. In west Bengal, it predicted a landslide victory of TMC, Mamta Banerjee and it was accurate. In Assam, it predicted the victory of BJP and it was accurate. In Kerala, it predicted the victory of Left Democratic Front (LDF) and it was accurate. But still, there has a question about the accuracy of exit polls. We cannot deny his (Rahul Gandhi) logic. There have many reasons. Obviously, the majority of exit polls are predicting a BJP victory in Uttar Pradesh as a slam dunk outcome but considering few pollster factors regarding capturing the data, always giving a question mark to all BJP supporters.
Rahul Gandhi said “There have times when exit polls got horribly wrong. Remember Bihar? The result will be different from exit poll results. We are winning”. Yesterday he has dismissed exit polls aired. He is the key person for decision making as his mother and congress president Sonia Gandhi away abroad for medical treatment. According to Mr Gandhi, “SP-Congress alliance is winning. Exactly same poll results we saw in Bihar, just 2 years ago in October –November 2015. All exit polls had predicted that BJP will be in No 1 position but they got 2nd place in that election. CM Nitish Kumar was re-elected, a grand alliance with Lalu Prasad Yadav’s RJD and the Congress to a big victory”.
“However, in the recent municipal election results in Maharashtra and the Panchayat election in Odisha, the BJP continues to gain popularity and the exit polls in the election for the five state assemblies indicated the same.
