The United States is supplying more Patriot missiles to Taiwan, to increase its pressure on China. Washington has announced 100 million in aid to strengthen the island’s missile defense system.
The Pentagon said in a statement on Monday that the US money would help strengthen and modernize Taiwan’s missile defense system. The U.S. Department of Defense has given the green light to the sale of missile equipment to Taiwan, according to the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency. And the necessary consent has been given to inform Congress in this regard. A few days ago, Taiwan appealed to the United States for defense equipment in the issue of growing Chinese aggression.
Taipei, meanwhile, welcomed the US move. In a statement, Taiwan’s foreign ministry made it clear that “in the issue of continued Chinese aggression, we will strengthen the country’s security.” We will deepen our relationship with the United States,” he said, adding that the decision to buy new Patriot missiles from the United States was taken in 2019. He also held talks with representatives of the then US President Donald Trump.
The United States had announced plans to launch 100 Harpoon missiles or coastal defense systems in 2020. Tensions are running high between Washington and Beijing. China has always claimed Taiwan as part of its territory. But since Xi Jinping took power in Beijing, the communist country has become more aggressive. President Xi has repeatedly tried to occupy Taiwan by force. As a result, the island nation of Taiwan is strengthening its defenses.
