The Centre has closed all bank accounts of the Missionaries of Charity established by Mother Teresa. Sources said the Centre has informed that financial transactions of all accounts will be stopped due to investigation. However, when contacted by the Mother House in Kolkata, no comment was sought on the news. But chief minister Mamata Banerjee has already tweeted criticism of the Centre’s move.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed surprise as soon as the news of the Missionaries of Charity came to light. “I am surprised to hear that all bank accounts of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity have been closed by the central government during Christmas celebrations,”
She writes, “22,000 patients and staff of the Missionaries of Charity are not getting food and medicines. Although the law is above all, it is not right to stop humanitarian activities.”
The Teresa Trust recently got involved in a controversy in Gujarat even though it was not known what is the exact reason for the inquiry was. An FIR was also lodged against missionaries of charity on the allegation of conversion. In addition to conversion, the home of the organization in Vadodara, Gujarat, is also alleged to have been used to hurt the sentiments of Hinduism. However, all the allegations were denied by the organization.
