For the first time in India Chief Justice of India heads a vacation bench even in winter. Supreme Court organizes vacation benches in summers which are long holidays for about two months. During the course of these vacations, the pending cases are heard by the bench of judges who works with the summer vacation bench. It has never happened before that someone would volunteer to change the 67-year history of Supreme Court by organizing a winter vacation bench.
Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra observed that there were plenty of compensation cases of different road accidents of the kin and families. These people are waiting to get legal compensations for about two decades but the regular courts were not able to do so due to other myriad cases. Increasing number of pendency in these cases was heartbreaking.
Chief Justice Dipak Misra wanted to bring about a positive change and planned to have a winter vacation bench so that these families can get proper compensations. In a first, Chief Justice of India heads a vacation bench in winter and asked other lawyer’s if they would appear before the court and proceed with their cases. The response was magnificent, the majority of the lawyers were ready to appear and were truly inspired with the Chief justice who was himself not enjoying the vacations and helping all those families who were waiting to get compensations.
This winter vacation bench sat on 22 December and 26 December in which Chief Justice of India and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul preceded the judgments. 113 cases were listed to the bench and 31 cases were solved with happy endings for both of the parties. These 31 families got compensation of 5.43 crore. This revolutionary winter vacation bench consisted of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice Adarsh Goel and Justice U U Lalit. All of the judges were happy to be the part of the change and took a step forward to soothe all those victims who have been suffering from decades.
It’s truly said that for change to happen, one has to sacrifice and step forward himself. Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, did exactly what was supposed to be done years ago.
