In the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, 694 Indian students trapped in a war situation have been rescued. Union Minister of State Hardeep Singh Puri said, “Indian students were picked up by bus from Sumy town and sent to Poltava town on Monday night. I personally contacted the control room. Today, 694 people have been rescued from Sumy. ”

According to a Foreign Ministry source, students from various countries, including India, trapped in Sumy will be taken by road from the southern city of Poltava to a country on the western border.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the war situation. At the same time, Modi sought the help of the two heads of state in rescuing Indian students stranded in various Ukrainian cities, including Sumi, according to sources in the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

Concerns over the safety of Indian students have been raised since the Russian army launched an attack on Sumi on Thursday night. A bomb blast at a factory next to the Sumy State University hostel has left students in a state of panic. Electricity and water supplies to the area were cut off shortly after the bombing. Indian students had to take shelter in bunkers in winter.
