Omicron is spreading rapidly in the country. In this situation, in the interest of the people, the Allahabad High Court has requested the Prime Minister and the Election Commission to postpone the Uttar Pradesh polls for a few months. On the basis of the court’s observation, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said today that he would be going to Uttar Pradesh next week.
The commission will take the next decision after examining the situation there. Prior to the visit, the commission officials are scheduled to hold a meeting on December 26 with officials from the Union Health Ministry on the situation in Uttar Pradesh and the other four polling states. According to sources, the Chief Election Commissioner will announce in a press conference on December 30 whether the polls in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, will be postponed.
In the second wave of Corona, the commission was criticized for voting in West Bengal on several occasions. Rush also had to pull in the last few campaigns as the infection increased. Amid rising Omicron infection, the commission could burn a fresh face if five states vote at the start of the new year. Uttar Pradesh currently has two of the 356 Omicron victims in the country.
Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan today hinted that the way in which Omicron has brought about the fourth wave of infection in the world, the third wave is almost inevitable if India does not follow the Covid rules. In the next four to six weeks, the Omicron infection could reach a point where the third wave of infections could hit the country.
