Students will be able to do a Ph.D. only after passing the four-year undergraduate course. It requires a minimum of 7.5 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) out of 10. The University Grants Commission (UGC) wants to introduce such rules. Recently UGC has prepared a draft proposal to change the rules for doing a Ph.D.

The UGC has sought the opinion of the concerned quarters on the draft prepared for amending the rules regarding minimum standards and procedures for the Ph.D. degrees by March 31. According to the draft, if you get a minimum of 7.5 CGPA after studying in a four-year undergraduate course, you will be given the opportunity to do a Ph.D. There will be opportunities for research in that four-year undergraduate course. A few days ago, it was announced that this will be launched very soon.

According to the education department, the central government is taking initiative to introduce such rules in line with the national education policy.

The draft proposes to reserve 60 percent of the total Ph.D. seats in any higher education institution for those who pass the National Eligibility Test (NET) and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). The remaining 40 percent can be filled by the concerned educational institution through entrance examination.
