Although Supreme Court has not given any decision, the only hope for the BJP is that the case has been accepted. It will be heard on Sunday if not next week or later. Even if the Kolkata polls are over, the BJP will demand a paramilitary force in advance, keeping in mind the forthcoming municipal elections in Howrah and other districts.

The state leadership of the BJP had earlier approached the Supreme Court demanding paramilitary forces in the Calcutta by-elections. But last Monday, a bench of Supreme Court Justice L Nageshwar Rao refused to accept the BJP’s case. The Supreme Court had said that it was not possible for them to understand the need to deploy paramilitary forces in the Calcutta polls. Therefore, the BJP has to approach the Calcutta High Court. Although the BJP went to the high court, it was first dismissed by a one-judge bench, followed by a division bench on Friday.

The BJP then approached the Supreme Court on Friday night. A petition was filed for a hearing on Saturday in Kolkata on Sunday. It should be mentioned here that the Supreme Court had directed the deployment of central forces in the Tripura polls.

On Saturday, BJP lawyers approached the Registrar of the Supreme Court. An urgent hearing was requested on Saturday but the solution was not forthcoming. The registrar accepted the case and sent it to the chief justice.
