Defense Research and Development Organisation of the Indian Army has developed the PINAKA Rocket launcher which has a multiple rocket launching system. This Pinaka launching system has been designed by DRDO, a Pune-based premier agency under the department of defense, to enhance the range and also to cater to the upcoming requirements with advanced technologies. Not only it has been developed but also it has been tested successfully at Pokhran Range. The earlier version of this system was a normal launcher which had a range of 40km but this time the modified version has a range of up to 60km and it can fire up to 12 rockets within 44 seconds.

Obviously, this project has raised the benchmark of the capability of the Indian Army up to another level. It will not only strengthen our present defense system but also has a good chance to penetrate the global defense market. This project was one of the most important projects taken by DRDO. It was aimed to provide firepower superiority which will certainly reduce causality in any War.

The requirement came in the early 1980s from the Indian Army on a long-range artillery system and within 2-3 years, the ministry of defense approved the budget for this project. Development began in 1986 and the first phase of the project was completed in 1992. After many modifications, now Indian army got this extended range Pinaka.
