The impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the Indian economy and arms imports is growing. In this situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a meeting with the Cabinet Security Committee today to examine the internal situation of the country.
According to government sources, he emphasized self-reliance in the field of defense. He said that all efforts should be made to become self-reliant on the issue of arms production. Besides, considering the security situation in war-torn Ukraine, India decided to temporarily close its embassy in Ukraine and relocate it to Poland.
Modi has called security committee meetings more than once since the war began. Initially, New Delhi’s concern was to bring Indian nationals back safely from Ukraine. After the completion of that work, this time thinking about the diplomatic, strategic and economic situation has started.
If the price of fuel skyrockets due to the war, it is expected to have a direct impact on the Indian economy. Although India has a special relationship with Russia and Russia confirmed their support in every situation, to India, PM Modi is always believed in self-reliance.
Currently, eighty percent of India’s defense equipment is still imported from Russia. That is why India has started thinking of alternative measures to reduce this dependence.
