The Hijab Row continues. Yesterday, America has criticized India in this regard. However, India has made it clear that other countries’ statements on the country’s internal affairs are not welcome.
In a statement, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the incident, which took place at some educational institutions in Karnataka over the dress code, was a matter for the High Court to consider. Our constitutional framework and process, as well as our democratic policy and politics, are the context in which problems are considered and resolved. Those who know India well understand this reality.
On behalf of the Ambassador of Large for International Religious Freedom, Rashad Hussain tweeted about the Karnataka incident, saying that banning hijab in schools was a violation of religious freedom. Rashad Hussain was appointed IRF ambassador in December last year. He was the first Muslim ambassador to the IRF.
The flames of protest have spread across the country. In the meantime, steps were taken to control the situation. For the next two weeks, all kinds of gatherings were banned on all the campuses in the capital Bengaluru. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommbai said the decision was taken to maintain law and order.
The decision came after attacks on hijab-wearing students began to surface in several parts of Karnataka. Meanwhile, the hijab case filed in the Karnataka High Court has been transferred to a larger bench of the court.
