Congress president Sonia Gandhi has demanded the resignation of Congress presidents of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur, and Goa provinces following the collapse of the recently concluded assembly polls. The news was reported by the Congress sources on Tuesday evening.
A party source said that the party organization in the respective states may be reshuffled after the Congress failed in the recently concluded five-state assembly polls.
That is why five state Congress presidents – Ajay Kumar Lallu of Uttar Pradesh, Navjyot Singh Sidhu of Punjab, Ganesh Godial of Uttarakhand, Girish Chorankar of Goa, and N Loken Singh, president of Manipur State Congress – have been asked to resign. Incidentally, Goa Provincial Congress President Girish resigned on Tuesday morning, admitting responsibility for the defeat in the Assembly polls.
The Congress Working Committee met for about five hours on Sunday afternoon after the tragic defeat of the Congress in the five-state assembly polls. Before the meeting started, there were rumors that this time Sonia may step down from the post of chairperson with the responsibility of the recent loss. Speculation also started about the name of Maharashtra leader Mukul Wasnik as a possible new president. However, Sonia did not step down in the end.
According to sources, Sonia told the working committee meeting that if the party thinks so, all three of them (Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka) are ready to resign from the leadership. But the Congress leaders politely removed Sonia’s offer and asked her to lead.
