The Supreme Court has asked for the latest information on starvation deaths in the country. The apex court also asked for a model project to tackle the problem of hunger. A bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana said, “Now is the time for voting. States will also be encouraged to provide cooked food if additional foodgrains are provided by the central government, ”he said.
The judges said,“ State governments are not reporting deaths by starvation. But then you have to accept that death is not starvation? We have to give the latest information about the starvation deaths to the officers of the center. ”
“We are not saying that the country is not doing anything to prevent death by starvation”,” the chief justice said. But consider creating model projects at the national level. Draft the project, finalize it and the rest is up to the states
“Attorney General KK Venugopal said the Center would consider the court’s statement. “We can create a project,” he said. States will be provided 2 percent extra foodgrains. The states should accept the affidavit that the proposal to provide additional 2 percent foodgrains for the project is acceptable to them.
The apex court has adjourned the hearing of the case for two weeks. During this period, states may file additional affidavits on malnutrition, hunger, and other issues.
