A special CBI court has convicted former Bihar chief minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in the fifth animal feed scandal case. The court found Lalu guilty of embezzling more than 139 crores from the Doranda treasury. His sentence will be announced on Friday, the CBI said.

In five fraud cases, multiple charges were brought against Lalu as the main conspirator. Lalu reached the court in the morning for the hearing of the fifth case on Tuesday. Following the hearing, Justice CK Shashi convicted Lalu. Earlier, on January 29, after hearing the arguments of both the parties, Justice Shashi did not give a verdict.

A total of 160 people were named in the list of accused in the incident, of whom 55 have already died. Seven of the accused agreed to be witnesses. A total of Rs 950 crore worth of fraud cases were registered against Lalu and the rest of the accused, mainly for embezzling money from the People’s Development Fund.

Apart from Lalu, former MP Jagadish Sharma was also named as the main accused in the case.

He was sent to jail after being convicted in two other animal feed cases in 2013 and 2016. He was sentenced to a total of 14 years in prison and fined Rs 60 lakh. Twice, however, he was released on bail.
