The Congress party today fielded Charanjit Singh Channy as its candidate for the Chief Minister’s post, sparking speculation that he would go to the polls. Punjab Chief Minister Channi has always contested from Chamkaur Sahib constituency. Earlier, his name was announced as a candidate for that seat. Today, the Congress party has decided to field Channi from the Bhadaur constituency also.
Significantly, even though the Congress party came to power in Punjab five years ago, they were third in the Bhadaur constituency. The Aam Aadmi Party won this seat by a huge margin. Party leaders say that nominating the chief minister himself for this seat means that the Congress party is not willing to give up any seat without a fight.
Incumbent Congress MLA Angad Singh Saini was not given a ticket in the Nawa Shahar constituency in the list of candidates released by the Congress Punjab today. Angadi’s wife, Aditi Singh, an MLA from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, recently quit the Congress and joined the BJP. That is why it is believed that the limbs were hit. Today, the Congress party has also released the fourth list of 61 candidates in Uttar Pradesh. In it, 24 women have been nominated.
However, Kuldeep Kumar has been nominated instead of Saroj Devi, the headmistress of Sikandrarao Nagar Palika, a female candidate in Hathras Sadar. After the rape of a Dalit girl in Hathras, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi reached Bohra. But there was outrage within the Congress over the candidature of Saroj Devi.
