Today former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia has resigned from the Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) in West Bengal. He actually gave resignation from all the official and political posts of All India TMC party. Although till now, TMC has not commented anything on the matter. Baichung Bhutia joined the TMC in 2013. At that time he contested on the party ticket from Darjeeling in 2014 State Assembly Elections. He has served the All Indian Trinamool Congress for 4 years.
The former captain has also given up the primary membership of the TMC party led by Mamata Banerjee. Announcing the decision, Mr. Baichung said: “As of today I am resigning officially and politically from the membership and all the official and political posts of AITMC party. From today, I will no longer a member of any political party in India.”
He joined the All India Trinamool Congress party led by Mamata Banerjee, the present Chief Minister of West Bengal, in 2013 with the aim to gain Darjeeling. Although TMC has not commented anything, as per the report a local TMC leader said that Baichung informed his decision almost one month back. According to him, Bhutia told that he wants to engage himself in a bigger political role in Sikkim as Baichung Bhutia is originally hailing from Sikkim and earlier he had spoken for Gorkhaland also in some meetings. He joined politics from his own choice and performed better than any other TMC leaders but his actual era is on the football. However, speculations are rife that Mr. Baichung may join Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and he might get involved in the Sikkim politics as Sikkim will go to Assembly polls in 2019.
He served as the head post of the sports council, NBSDC (North Bengal Sports Development Council). Mr. Bhutia has spent most of his career playing for Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in Kolkata Maidan.
He said, “This my personal decision to quit AITMC and I will not be associated with any party in future in India” TMC secretary general Mr. Partha Chattopadhyai was not available for comment. However, as per the report, Baichung Bhutia expressed his desire to quit the party a month ago. According to the report, there was no misunderstanding in between Baichung Bhutia and TMC and the entire matter was done in a cordial manner.
On the other hand, another comment by Mr. Kiren Rijiju has turned the equation in a different direction. Even though the former footballer Mr. Bhutia did not reveal his future plans after this, Mr. Kiren Rijiju, union minister told in an immediate tweet following his announcement, that triggered further speculation over new political equations too. Mr. Rijiju tweeted that “the football icon and former captain Baichung Bhutia’s resignation from Trinamool was actually expected. He told me that he has high regards for West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee but he is unable to cope with the present situation. He actually wants to do more for Football in India and Sikkim. My best wishes to Mr. Bhaichung for his future endeavor”.
