The results of Gujarat civic polls have been declared today. In the civic polls, BJP couldn’t make a good impression on the state people although they have expected a lot. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the most seats in the elections today, but BJP has lost the actual ground compared to the last elections 5 years ago. In this year the BJP has won 47 of 75 municipalities for which elections were held but last time in 2013 it had won 59. Opposition party Congress has won 16 municipalities, which 5 more than the 11 it had won in 2013. Congress top leaders are telling that they defeated the BJP and they are claiming that today’s result is a major gain for them. It will help them to find out themselves in the next general election in 2019. They also claimed that it has supported four Independents who have won and so its tally today is 20.
Bharatiya Janata Party’s loss of twelve municipalities comes just 2 months after the party posted its weakest performance in the assembly elections held in last year in December 2017. This was very largely in keeping with the actual electoral mood in BJP’s bastion of the state ever since the assembly elections. The picture was almost same in that election also. The share of the BJP party, which had bagged total 117 seats in the 182-member assembly in 2012, dipped to 99 seats.
In few municipalities, Congress scores a thumping win which includes Rajula municipality in Amreli area. The Congress ousts BJP by winning 27 out of 28 seats. The ruling party’s tally reduced just one in the civic body. The Jafrabad and Rajula municipalities are the part of Rajula Assembly seat which Congress had snatched away from Bharatiya Janata Party last December.
Mr. Hira Solanki had won the Rajula Assembly seat for 4 times continuously before losing his bid for the 5th term in December Assembly election. Jafrabad is his hometown. Congress candidate Mr. Amrish Der from Rajula town defeated Solanki on his way to winning Rajula Assembly constituency.
On the other hand, ruling party BJP in Amreli district snatches away Chalala municipality from Congress while retains power in Jafrabad town and Lathi town. For Congress, defeat in Jafrabad, Lathi and Chalala municipalities comes 2 months after it won all 5 assemblies in the district in last December.
Ruling party BJP retains power in Kalavad and A Jamjodhpur municipalities in Jamnagar district, and snatches away Dhrol municipality from the Congress. Dhrol is always believed to be a stronghold of Mr. Raghavji Patel. He is the former Congress leader who actually had defected to BJP ahead of the state Assembly elections.
This is the 2nd indication for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The first indication was observed in the state assembly elections and the 2nd indication was observed in this civic elections. Now BJP can easily understand that countdown has already begun for their unhealthy impression in the next general elections. But still, they have enough time to prove themselves as the direction of governance by the BJP was started on the right path.
