To resist the Hindutva onslaught in the next Lok Sabha elections, Shashi Tharoor- two-time MP from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala- said that Congress and other like-minded parties should come together to protect the secular fabric of India. According to Mr. Tharoor, the Left parties should also join hands on that platform for it is necessary. He said that the BJP government will make a major assault on the Constitution of India if they are able to secure a majority in both houses. Congress lawmaker Shashi Tharoor said that in order to create a Hindu Rashtra, BJP will try to dilute Constitutional article which holds the secular fabric of India including the Article 370 on Kashmir issue.

A wordsmith and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is maybe out of highfalutin words, as someone pointed out. By repeating some of his old favorites, was he just capitalizing on his social media fan base or was he exhausted after being the target of 90 minutes of finger pointing?

The inquiring minds want to know what next after hearing Mr. Tharoor describe Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Speech in the Lower House. Just last year in May, Shashi Tharoor famously reprised British Journalist Mehndi Hasan quoting, “a farrago of distortions and misrepresentations” while describing the various allegations made about him killing his wife Sunanda Pushkar.

Mr. Tharoor said that he thinks that BJP’s real agendas will come to the fore after they will have full control of both the houses. H warned about the major assault on the constitution in such a case. He further asked that in such a case whether the Supreme Court will stand by it basic structure doctrine and will it interpret to include the principles of equality, non-discrimination, and freedom of worship etc. He said that it will lead to reducing the Constitution being a document of a religiously-derived majoritarianism.

He said that this was not the condition during the rule of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) under the leadership of them Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He recalled that a constitutional review committee was formed under Supreme Court Judge M N Venkatachaliah but it never resorted to working only for the idea of Hinduism.

Mr. Tharoor said that the committee under K N Govindacharya, an ideologue of the Rashtriya Swayamseval Sangh (RSS) has been working for the present dispensation. He alleged that Mr. Govindacharya has already talked with some candor to journalists about what he is trying to do.

Shashi Tharoor says that in such a case secularism and socialism will have to go. He said that BJP has not made a move in their first term because they wanted to secure a majority in Rajya Sabha as well so that there is no obstacle in its sway and people will have to understand this.

The use of that phrase by Mr. Tharoor figuratively ‘broke the Internet’. There were various posts written about how Mr. Tharoor sent even highly educated people running to the dictionary to look up the meaning of ‘farrago’.
