This is what is called India’s worse fire accident in a very long time that resulted in the loss of lives. The incident occurred during the midnight at around 1:00 AM as per survivors and eyewitnesses. A rooftop restaurant atop a building in Kamala Mill’s compound is where the fire started first. Kamala mills as such is a commercial hub that houses several offices and even some national television channels. The restaurant had a false roof which was made using inflammable materials that caught fire. It soon spread to a bistro and another pub beside it.

Cause of Death

As much as fourteen people died in this unfortunate incident and twenty-one got injured. Experts say that it is not the flames that killed people but thick fumes that resulted in asphyxiation. Among the dead are twelve women who were in the age groups of twenty to thirty. Some of them who are injured in the incident is said to be in critical conditions while others are recovering at KEM and Sion hospitals. Three of them are told to be in critical condition and people are just praying for them.

Lack of Safety Measures

The pub that became victim to this fire was very poor with regards to safety features. There were no proper exit points and no emergency exit at all. There was just one tiny staircase to the pub and it was the only way to entry and exit. The ventilation inside the pub was not sufficient either. The place was all cramped and did not meet even the most basic safety standards. There were no fire extinguishers at multiple points and the fire equipment that was present inside malfunctioned. So there was no way everyone could escape the scene within time.

Owners Booked

The owners and staff responsible have fled the scene and absconding. That clearly shows they are reckless and hold responsibility for the incident. Mumbai police have booked a case against the owners and are investigating the matter. The building was located close to other buildings and severe damage could have lead to even greater disaster.

What Are the Incident Points

People are coming up with various opinions and most of them say BMC is equally responsible as they have been negligent in identifying safety of such pubs. Now the question is how many other pubs and restaurants in India are unsafe. It is very important that business places such as these should give the highest importance to safety along with other services. Had the authorities done regular checks on the safety standards, there would not have been a scope for such fire accident. It is advised that the youngsters who party at pubs should consider the kind of safety the place is offering.
